recreation is for everyone

We believe that access to recreation is a basic human right.

However, recreation is not always equally accessible, especially when living with a disability or health condition.

By identifying one's strengths and interests, we can better integrate clients into recreational activities that

improve quality of life and everyday functioning.

For individuals or groups, we facilitate engaging and therapeutic programming to increase social skills, physical fitness, community engagement, cognition, and emotional regulation.

Guided by therapeutic assessments, our personalized development plans are tailored to identify individual strengths, recreational interests, barriers to recreation, and community resources.

By addressing and removing barriers, we support activity integration through participation, observation, and resource implementation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is recreation therapy (RT)?

Recreation therapy (RT) uses leisure activities for therapeutic benefit, improving overall well-being.

What are the benefits of RT?

Participating in meaningful leisure activities creates a sense of joy, purpose, compentency, relaxation, belonging, personal development, and self-mastery.

Therapeutic interventions aim to increase well-being in social, cognitive, emotional, physical, spiritual, and environmental realms through recreation participation.

How much does RT cost?

Our full rate of service is $37.50/hour. However, to keep our services accessible to everyone, we also offer a subsidized rate of $26/hour to those in financial need.

Can I access funding for RT?

FSCD - The Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) program provides funding to encourage your child to take part in recreational programming in the community and at home.

PDD - The Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program helps eligible adults with planning and services to meet personal needs and goals including respite services (i.e., individual recreational programming) and community access supports that help recreational engagement.

LAP - The Leisure Access Program (LAP) allows eligible Edmontonians access to the City of Edmonton recreation facilities and attractions at a free or reduced cost.

How does RT differ from respite?

While recreation therapy has some shared goals with traditional respite services, we offer a specialized scope of practice. Recreation therapy focuses on building autonomy, independence, and community integration towards life mastery for our clients.

Accessible Recreation does not provide:

  • ADL services such as toileting, grooming, dressing, feeding, medication administration, and mobility assistance
  • overnight respite care
  • personal transportation to medical appointments
